An IEO, or initial exchange offering, is a fundraising method similar to an ICO.However, the difference lies in the use of a reputable cryptocurrency exchange to host the token sale.

The exchange does not necessarily legitimize the project by default, but the differentiator between an IEO and an ICO is the level of safety and security of the investment process itself - as it leverages the exchange’s built in security features.

Furthermore, it guarantees that a successful IEO campaign will result in the listing of that token on the hosting Exchange.

As controlled as it may be, it is important to still do your own due diligence and assess each project before investing your hard earned capital.
As a project, one of the most costly and time consuming aspects of running a tokenized fundraising campaign is building of your investor base - community or otherwise.

You cannot merely conduct an IEO for sake of raising money. The same rules and scrutiny are far greater than that of an ICO; the goal is to continuously weed out bad players that participate in tokenized fundraising for the wrong reasons.

First and foremost, you must have a prototype that requires the use of blockchain technology, or cryptocurrency, or is significantly enhanced by it.

You must prepare all brand assets, business plan and or business deck, technical documentation, company information, team details, have sufficient online representation (Web and/or mobile), and more.

You must also ensure that the token economics are sound.
Exchanges conduct a stringent process of due diligence before considering a project for an IEO. Therefore, as a project manager or founder all necessary materials, including legal documents, must be in order for review by the exchange. There is often the misconception that the process of onboarding is merely application submission and approval, which could not be further from the truth. Standardized onboarding is an ever-improving process with it becoming tougher for projects to secure listings on higher volume exchanges.
The days of weak business models and unfathomably high raise targets are no longer.

IEO’s, governed by official Exchanges, bring a new set of parameters which projects and companies must align to in order to be accepted into their IEO pipeline. With due diligence and capital requirement feasibility at the top of the list of items stringently assessed, this new method of fundraising forces companies and projects to be accurate, info-intensive and realistic about their position and the amount of money that they need.

From the past IEOs that have been launched, the average raise targets have been around $4,000,000 to $5,000,000 (million) US Dollars - unlike the ICO boom where targets often exceeded $50,000,000 (million) US Dollars.

Focus on building your Prototype, developing your business plan/business model, creating an effective public appearance (Brand assets and Website), and establishing a reasonable need when it comes to raising capital, before doing an IEO.

An Initial Exchange Offering, as its name suggests, is conducted on the platform of a cryptocurrency exchange. Contrary to Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs), an IEO is administered by a crypto exchange on behalf of the startup that seeks to raise funds with its newly issued tokens.
  • Find out which exchanges are hosting the IEO. There can be more than one participating exchange.
  • Sign up for an account on the exchange by passing their whitelisting and Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures.
  • Check what cryptocurrencies will be accepted during the IEO and fund your account appropriately.
  • Wait for the start of the IEO to purchase your tokens!
Investors who take part in an IEO are subjected to less risks, but one must always be conscious of the process. As opposed to ICOs, in an IEO investors are not required to use personal or private wallets, they simply need to create an account with an exchange and purchase tokens as they would any other cryptocurrency on that exchange. Major exchanges such as Binance, Huobi, Bittrex and so forth would not risk their reputation by cooperating with fraudulent projects, which means that there is a far more robust vetting process to ensure that the project is legitimate.
Depending on the structure of the IEO, as per each exchange's requirements, these amounts can vary. Not only in the value you are allowed to invest, but also the number of participants that can access the sale. Sometimes there is a maximum amount you will be allowed to purchase, as well as how many people may participate in the sale.
